NDC Clarifies Reports of Aspirants Blocked from Participating in Primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly rejected allegations that some aspirants are being blocked from participating in the party’s ongoing primaries, emphasizing that all candidates who passed the screening process are fully eligible to contest. In a statement issued by Osa Director Esq., the National Publicity Secretary, the party declared that any attempt by state chapters or officials to prevent cleared aspirants from taking part in the primaries is invalid and legally unenforceable. The NDC stressed that no aspirant should be denied the right to participate in the exercise anywhere in the country.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, including transparency, fairness, accountability, and inclusivity. It described any actions by party officials that contradict these values as unacceptable and contrary to the party’s constitution and guiding ethos. The NDC directed all members and officials at every level to ensure the primaries are conducted peacefully and strictly in line with party regulations and guidelines.

The primaries for the presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly elections are scheduled to take place nationwide on May 29, 2026. The party clarified that while State Assembly primaries will be held within respective constituency areas, all other primaries will occur at the local government level, as previously communicated. This structure aims to ensure broader participation and adherence to logistical and administrative planning.

The NDC’s stance underscores its determination to uphold a level playing field for all aspirants, regardless of political influence or affiliation. The party’s leadership has called on members to remain vigilant and report any irregularities to the appropriate committees. The screening and selection process, which preceded the primaries, was designed to verify the qualifications and eligibility of candidates, and only those who successfully completed it are permitted to proceed.

By reinforcing its commitment to free and fair internal elections, the NDC aims to build public trust and strengthen its position as a credible political alternative in Nigeria. The party’s emphasis on inclusivity and adherence to constitutional procedures reflects its broader vision for a democratic and participatory political system. As the country prepares for the 2026 general elections, the NDC’s primaries will serve as a critical step in shaping its candidate lineup and organizational readiness.
