Court Remands Three Suspects Over Alleged Diversion of Government Mosquito Nets

The Osun State Police Command has arrested and remanded three suspects in a correctional facility over the alleged diversion and sale of government-owned mosquito nets meant for free distribution under a public health programme. The suspects, identified as Rabbi Bennett, Opeyemi Ajibola, and Aminu Ibrahim, were arraigned following an investigation that uncovered the illegal disposal of 300 mosquito nets. The incident, which occurred on June 8, 2026, in Ife North Local Government Area, has drawn attention to the misuse of public health resources in the state.

According to DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Police Public Relations Officer, the investigation began on June 9, 2026, after reports surfaced about the suspected sale of mosquito nets that were designated for public distribution. The nets were part of a government health initiative aimed at reducing malaria cases, particularly among vulnerable populations. The police statement revealed that the suspects sold six bundles containing 300 nets, a clear violation of the programme’s intent and public trust.

Rabbi Bennett, a staff member of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) attached to Ife North Local Government Area in Ipetumodu, was named as one of the key individuals involved. Opeyemi Ajibola, a commercial motorcycle rider, and Aminu Ibrahim were also implicated in the scheme. The investigation was triggered by a dispute between Bennett and Ajibola over the division of money allegedly earned from the sale, which led police to uncover the full extent of the alleged misconduct.

After their arrest, the suspects were taken into custody for questioning. During interrogation, they reportedly admitted to their involvement in the illegal transaction. The police confirmed that the case has been formally charged before a competent court, and the defendants are currently remanded in custody pending further judicial proceedings.

The Osun State Police Command emphasized its commitment to protecting public assets and ensuring accountability in public welfare programmes. “The Command reiterates its commitment to safeguarding public resources and ensuring that individuals entrusted with public welfare programmes are held accountable under the law,” the statement read. Authorities have concluded their investigation and handed the case over to the judiciary for determination.

This incident highlights the importance of transparency and oversight in the distribution of public health supplies. As the case moves through the courts, it serves as a reminder that misuse of government resources will not be tolerated. The outcome may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, reinforcing public confidence in health programmes across Nigeria.
