The Labour Party in Sokoto State has elected Yawale Abubakar as its new state chairman, marking a significant step in the party’s efforts to strengthen its organizational structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. The election took place on Saturday during a state congress held at the party secretariat in Sokoto, with delegates from all 23 local government areas actively participating. The process was described as peaceful, orderly, and credible by Prof. Mahmud Muhammad, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, who announced Abubakar as the consensus candidate. The presence of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials underscored the transparency and legitimacy of the proceedings.
Abubakar, in his acceptance speech, emphasized his commitment to repositioning the Labour Party in Sokoto through expanded grassroots engagement, internal democracy, and inclusive leadership. He highlighted the need for the party to address pressing challenges facing the state, including rising hardship, unemployment, insecurity, and the increasing cost of living, which he attributed to failed leadership. Abubakar noted that the party’s performance in the 2023 elections demonstrated its potential to make stronger inroads in future electoral contests, particularly with improved organization and mobilization.
He outlined a clear roadmap for the party’s future, focusing on strengthening party structures, empowering youths and women, and conducting issue-based campaigns. These initiatives, he said, are critical to building a resilient and responsive political platform capable of winning public trust. Abubakar also stressed the importance of unity, accountability, and transparency within the party to ensure long-term success.
The party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Aminu Umar, commended the conduct of the congress and urged the new leadership to uphold these values. He emphasized the need for cohesion and strategic planning as the party prepares for upcoming elections. The congress concluded with the election of a full slate of state executives, signaling a fresh start for the Labour Party in Sokoto.
Party members expressed renewed confidence in the leadership and direction of the party, viewing the election as a turning point in its growth trajectory. With Abubakar at the helm, the Labour Party in Sokoto is positioning itself as a credible alternative in the state’s political landscape. As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, the party’s focus on grassroots mobilization and internal reform could play a pivotal role in shaping its electoral fortunes.
