Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North in the Nigerian Senate, has urged Nigerians living abroad to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in 2027, citing the economic reforms introduced by the current administration as a foundation for long-term national progress. Speaking during a meeting with a cross-section of Nigerians in Maryland, United States, on Wednesday, Kalu emphasized that while challenges remain, the government’s economic policies have placed Nigeria on a more stable financial path. He also called for backing Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the next governor of Lagos State, according to a statement released by his chief press secretary, Kenneth Udeh.
Kalu stressed that fundamental economic reforms require time to yield full benefits and cannot be expected to solve all problems immediately. He praised President Tinubu for making tough decisions to stabilize the economy, drawing comparisons with successful reform efforts in countries like Singapore. “So, what President Tinubu is doing, I understand very well. Most people don’t understand. Most Nigerians don’t understand,” he said, highlighting the need for public patience and understanding.
While acknowledging macroeconomic improvements, Kalu noted that microeconomic hardships persist, largely due to insecurity across various parts of the country. He pointed out that farmers in Northern Nigeria and workers in some South-Eastern communities face difficulties accessing their farms and workplaces because of safety concerns. This, he argued, hampers economic activity at the grassroots level despite positive indicators at the national level.
On the contentious issue of petroleum subsidy, Kalu firmly rejected calls to restore it, arguing that the policy was historically plagued by corruption and financial mismanagement. Drawing from his experience in both politics and the petroleum sector, he claimed many companies benefiting from the subsidy were not genuine, and the system encouraged wasteful spending. “I believe that bringing back subsidy is not the best for Nigerians. It’s not an option to the economic development of Nigeria. The government can do other things,” he stated.
Instead of reinstating the subsidy, Kalu advocated for alternative measures to alleviate hardship, such as targeted social interventions and improved security. He commended Tinubu for taking difficult but necessary steps, while also noting that significant work remains, especially in restoring peace and creating conditions conducive to sustained growth. His remarks come amid growing debate over economic policies and their impact on ordinary citizens.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, Kalu’s call for diaspora support underscores the increasing role of Nigerians abroad in shaping political outcomes.
