A deadly attack by bandits in Iluke community, Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area in Kogi State, on Wednesday left three people dead, including a vice principal of a school, and resulted in the abduction of three students. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, also disrupted the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as students scheduled to write the English Language paper were taken away during the assault. The attack has sent shockwaves through the community and raised fresh alarm over the deteriorating security situation in the region.
The bandits, reportedly disguised in military uniforms, infiltrated the community with the intent to carry out a mass abduction. According to the Kogi State Government, security operatives responded swiftly and managed to foil the planned abduction of more students. The government confirmed that three community members lost their lives in the attack, while the students who were initially taken were later rescued. The incident has left families in mourning and intensified fears among residents about their safety.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, condemned the attack and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He noted that the assailants used deception by wearing military attire to gain access to the community, highlighting the growing sophistication of bandit tactics in the area. The government also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and to the people of Iluke and Bunu District, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens.
The attack comes amid rising insecurity in parts of Kogi State, where banditry and kidnapping have become increasingly common. The fact that the incident occurred during an important examination period adds to the gravity of the situation, as it not only threatens lives but also disrupts the education of students. The government’s swift response in rescuing the abducted students is seen as a positive step, but many residents remain anxious about future threats.
Security agencies have been urged to step up patrols and surveillance in vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks. The incident has also drawn attention to the need for improved security measures around schools and examination centers, especially in rural areas. As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
This tragic event underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms and community protection strategies in Kogi State. The government and security forces must remain vigilant to prevent such attacks from becoming a recurring nightmare for residents.
