The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to a credible, inclusive, and peaceful 2027 General Election in Ondo State, as Resident Electoral Commissioner Mutiu Agboke urged stakeholders to trust the electoral process and support ongoing reforms. Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Akure, Agboke emphasized that despite challenges, significant progress has been made in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system. He highlighted that INEC remains dedicated to protecting citizens’ votes and ensuring that every valid vote counts in determining the nation’s leaders.
The meeting brought together key political parties, civil society organizations, media representatives, and other electoral stakeholders to discuss preparations for the upcoming elections. Central to the discussions was the need for increased public awareness and active citizen participation. Agboke stressed that voter education and stakeholder engagement are critical components of building confidence in the electoral process. He noted that INEC is implementing reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and the overall integrity of elections across the country.
Dr. Agboke also announced that the nationwide display of the Preliminary Register of Voters will begin on October 9, 2026, in all 203 electoral wards across Ondo State. This exercise will allow eligible voters to verify their names, addresses, and other personal details on the register. Citizens who find discrepancies or wish to make claims or objections can do so during this period, ensuring accuracy and inclusivity in the final voter roll. The REC further confirmed that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will commence simultaneously with the display, urging especially those who transferred their registration during the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration to collect their cards promptly.
The engagement in Akure is part of INEC’s broader strategy to deepen collaboration with stakeholders, promote voter education, and foster an environment conducive to free and fair elections. The commission aims to ensure that the electoral process is accessible, transparent, and trusted by all Nigerians. Following the Akure session, the stakeholder engagement series will continue in Okitipupa on Friday, October 9, 2026, extending the dialogue to more communities across the state.
As Nigeria prepares for its next general election, these efforts underscore INEC’s determination to uphold democratic principles and empower citizens through informed participation. The upcoming activities mark a crucial step toward building a resilient electoral framework that reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
