Three suspects have been arrested by the Imo State Police Command in connection with the alleged murder of 21-year-old Christogonus Chinedu Chibuzo, a 100-level Cyber Security student at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. The incident, which occurred on May 30 under suspicious circumstances, has sparked widespread concern within the university community and beyond. The suspects—Benedict Chukwuemeka, 21, Gospel Kelechi Ikenna, 24, and Anastasia Obioma, 21—all 500-level students of the same university, are currently in police custody following a swift investigation.
According to a press statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, preliminary findings indicate that Chibuzo was assaulted by members of the Man O’ War organization on campus after being accused of stealing N13,500. The investigation revealed that the victim was allegedly restrained and subjected to severe physical abuse, leading to critical injuries. He was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed his death.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police for Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, immediately ordered a rapid response. Police operatives acted swiftly, arresting the three suspects and securing relevant evidence. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy, as part of the ongoing forensic process.
To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, CP Bosso directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri. The SCID will conduct a comprehensive examination of all available evidence and testimonies. The Commissioner also emphasized that all individuals connected to the incident would be identified and investigated to ensure justice is fully served.
The Imo State Police Command has reassured the family of the deceased, the university community, and the public that it remains fully committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Authorities are working diligently to maintain transparency and uphold the rule of law. This case has drawn attention to campus safety and student conduct, prompting calls for stricter oversight within university organizations.
As investigations continue, the police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. The incident underscores the need for vigilance and accountability in academic institutions across Nigeria. The outcome of this case will likely influence future policies on student safety and campus security.
