The Imo East Senatorial hopeful of the Action People’s Party, APP, Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has raised alarm over the alarming surge in insecurity, killings, and violent attacks across Imo State, particularly in Umuguma, Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, and parts of Ngor Okpala. He made this statement during an unscheduled condolence visit to the family of Mr. David Onyegbula, a community vigilante officer who was brutally killed by armed assailants in Umuojukwu, Umuagu, Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area. The visit occurred while Amadi was on a private engagement with Rt. Commodore Ogechi Osuagwu, a respected Nigerian Navy veteran and community leader.
Amadi expressed deep sympathy to the widow, Mrs. Joy David Onyegbula, their children, and extended family, describing the loss as both painful and avoidable. He lamented that such tragic deaths are now becoming a recurring feature in many communities across the state, a situation he called a “tragic indictment” on the government’s failure to protect citizens. He urged the widow to remain courageous and find strength in faith, acknowledging that no words can fully heal the pain of losing a loved one under such violent circumstances.
In a strong condemnation of the ongoing insecurity, Amadi accused the APC-led government in Imo State of neglecting its constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property. He pointed out that the continued bloodshed, fear, and instability are clear signs of governance failure, especially as political leaders focus more on power struggles than on delivering security. He stressed that it is unacceptable for citizens to live in constant fear, with families displaced, businesses crippled, and livelihoods disrupted due to the unchecked violence.
According to Amadi, the rising tide of insecurity has not only claimed innocent lives but has also deepened hopelessness and eroded public confidence in leadership. He called on security agencies to intensify intelligence operations, strengthen community-based security efforts, and swiftly apprehend and prosecute those responsible for these heinous acts. He emphasized that the people of Imo State deserve peace, safety, and dignity, not fear and tension.
In a statement released on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Cajetan Duke, Amadi prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and reassured affected families that their suffering is not ignored. He urged all levels of government to abandon political propaganda and show genuine commitment to restoring security and rebuilding trust. The situation, he warned, demands urgent, decisive, and transparent action from all stakeholders. The future of Imo State, he said, hinges on the ability of leaders to prioritize the safety and well-being of their people over political interests.
