How President Tinubu Could Lose in 2027, According to Adebayo

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has outlined a strategic approach to defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential race, emphasizing policy-focused campaigning over emotional appeals. Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Adebayo argued that Tinubu’s administration can only be challenged by addressing the real economic hardships faced by Nigerians, rather than relying on protests or populist rhetoric. He stressed that the current government’s failure to deliver on key economic promises makes it vulnerable to opposition, especially if the opposition can present a clear alternative.

Adebayo pointed out that the Nigerian economy is in a state of crisis, with ordinary citizens struggling to meet basic needs despite working hard. He cited government employees at both middle and upper levels who are unable to pay their bills, highlighting how the economic downturn is affecting even those in secure jobs. “I have seen a lot of people across the country who are citizens, who are qualified, working very hard, even government employees at the middle and upper level who can’t pay their bills,” he said, underscoring the widespread nature of the financial strain.

He further criticized the administration for not meeting expectations set four years ago, saying, “This is not the economy I prayed for four years ago.” Adebayo insisted that Nigerians are not lazy, but are simply overwhelmed by rising costs and stagnant incomes. He emphasized that voters are becoming increasingly aware of the disconnect between government promises and reality, making it easier for a credible opposition to gain traction.

According to Adebayo, the key to defeating Tinubu lies in presenting a realistic, issue-driven platform that speaks directly to the struggles of everyday Nigerians. He rejected the idea that anger or outrage alone can win elections, arguing that voters are more likely to support candidates who offer practical solutions. “You can’t defeat Tinubu by rabble rousing and anger, you have to raise issues because he’s in charge of government and he’s not delivering,” he stated, reinforcing the need for substantive policy discussions in the political space.

The SDP candidate’s comments come at a time when public dissatisfaction with the economy is growing, with inflation, unemployment, and fuel scarcity continuing to dominate national discourse. His focus on economic sustainability and governance accountability aligns with broader voter concerns, potentially positioning him as a serious contender in the next election cycle. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential elections, Adebayo’s strategy may influence how opposition parties frame their campaigns, shifting the focus from emotional appeals to concrete policy proposals.
