Three people have been killed and a teenage girl injured in a violent attack by suspected Fulani bandits at a smoking spot in Rantiya community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred on July 4, 2026, around 7:58pm, when sporadic gunfire erupted, prompting a swift response from troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP). Upon arrival, security personnel discovered the bodies of three young men who had been fatally shot, while a teenage girl was found with gunshot wounds sustained during the assault. The victims were immediately evacuated to medical facilities for treatment and identification.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the General Hospital in Barkin Ladi, while the injured girl was rushed to Damlak Clinic for urgent medical care. Security sources confirmed that the attackers fled the scene after the attack, leaving behind a trail of violence and fear in the community. The incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region, particularly in areas bordering the Middle Belt and the North Central zone of Nigeria.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert covering the Lake Chad region, disclosed the details in a recent report. He noted that troops have launched a search operation to track down and apprehend the perpetrators. Makama emphasized that security agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the motive and identify those responsible. He also stated that efforts are ongoing to restore calm and prevent further attacks in the area.
The attack has raised alarm among residents of Barkin Ladi and neighboring communities, who have called for increased military presence and better protection. Many fear that such incidents could escalate if not adequately addressed. The region has seen a surge in banditry and armed violence in recent months, with multiple attacks reported across Plateau State and adjoining states.
Security agencies have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest military or police unit. Authorities are also working to strengthen intelligence gathering and community engagement to prevent future attacks. The incident underscores the fragile security situation in parts of Plateau State, where armed groups continue to exploit weak governance and porous borders.
As investigations continue, the government and security forces are under pressure to provide answers and ensure justice for the victims. The tragic loss of life and injury to a minor highlight the urgent need for lasting solutions to insecurity in the region. This attack serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s internal security, especially in areas vulnerable to armed criminal elements.
