Gunmen Attack Mining Site in Plateau, Kill Three Workers

Gunmen attacked a mining site in Nyango, Gyel District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday, killing three people and injuring two others in a violent incident that has raised fresh alarm over insecurity in the region. The assault occurred around 11:50 a.m. when unidentified armed men stormed the site and opened fire on workers, leaving the area in chaos. Local residents and security watchers have expressed deep concern over the growing wave of violence in the area, which has now claimed lives and disrupted daily life.

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) swiftly reacted to the attack, issuing a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, to highlight the worsening security situation in Gyel and surrounding communities. According to BYM, this incident is not isolated but part of a pattern of recurring violence that has plagued the region for some time. The group noted that residents of Gyel and nearby areas in Bassa Local Government Area have repeatedly reported attacks linked to armed elements operating along the Gyero and Rafin Buna axis.

These armed groups, the association said, have been responsible for multiple violent acts that have led to loss of lives, forced displacement of civilians, and the breakdown of economic activities in the area. Farmers, traders, and miners have all been affected, with many forced to abandon their livelihoods due to fear of attack. The mining site targeted on Tuesday is one of several key economic hubs in the region, and its disruption underscores the broader impact of insecurity on local development.

BYM called on security agencies and government authorities to take immediate and decisive action to dismantle criminal hideouts and bring perpetrators to justice. The group emphasized that only sustained, coordinated efforts can end the cycle of violence and restore peace. They urged the military, police, and other security forces to increase patrols and conduct intelligence-driven operations in the affected areas.

The attack in Nyango adds to a growing list of security challenges in Plateau State, where intercommunal clashes, banditry, and armed robbery have become increasingly common. With no immediate response from security agencies reported, residents remain anxious and fearful for their safety. The government’s ability to respond effectively to such incidents will be critical in preventing further escalation and rebuilding trust in affected communities.

As the investigation into Tuesday’s attack continues, the people of Gyel and surrounding areas are calling for urgent intervention to protect lives and property. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security situation in parts of Plateau State and the need for long-term solutions to ensure lasting peace.
