Gunmen Ambush and Kill Plateau Monarch in Deadly Road Attack

The killing of Saf Samuel Alaket, traditional ruler of Gwande District in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, has sent shockwaves across the region after suspected Fulani militia ambushed his vehicle on Wednesday evening. The attack occurred around 7:30 pm near the boundary between Sha District and Daffo community, close to his hometown, as he returned from a traditional council meeting at the council headquarters. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, leaving the District Head critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead.

The incident has plunged the Gwande community and the wider Bokkos LGA into mourning. Peter Gwande, a community leader and member of the late monarch’s council, confirmed the attack in a phone interview. He described the murder as a profound loss not only for the people of Gwande but for the entire Bokkos Local Government Area and Plateau State. He emphasized that the attack has deeply affected the traditional council and local residents, who are now grieving the loss of their revered leader.

Christopher Luka, a youth leader in Gwande, also spoke about the aftermath of the ambush. He noted that the incident has caused serious tension in the area, with residents expressing fear and anger over the growing insecurity. However, he added that security operatives have since taken control of the situation, preventing further escalation. The community is now calling for immediate action from security agencies to ensure justice and prevent similar attacks in the future.

Efforts to get an official statement from the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful. Despite multiple attempts via phone calls and text messages, he did not respond, leaving a gap in official confirmation and updates. This lack of communication has raised concerns among locals about the government’s response to the rising insecurity in the region.

The killing of Saf Samuel Alaket underscores the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, particularly in rural areas where traditional leaders are often targeted. His death highlights the vulnerability of community leaders and the urgent need for enhanced security measures. As the community mourns, calls for accountability and swift justice are growing louder. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile peace in the region and the need for coordinated efforts to restore safety and stability.
