Former Arsenal GK Reveals Why He Switched Allegiance from England to Nigeria

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has announced his switch from England to Nigeria, expressing his excitement ahead of his potential debut for the Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup in London. The 24-year-old, who recently had a strong season on loan at Wrexham in the Championship, is expected to receive his first call-up under manager Éric Chelle for the tournament. Okonkwo revealed that discussions with the Nigerian national team setup began last summer, marking the start of his journey to represent his heritage on the international stage.

Okonkwo described the moment he received confirmation of his selection as deeply emotional, with the goalkeeping coach being the first to inform him. “When the moment finally arose, the goalie coach was the first to message me, to let me know that I have been selected for the camp,” he shared. He immediately called his parents to share the news, expressing pride and joy at the opportunity to play for Nigeria. “I have been wanting this moment for a while now and to finally have the opportunity is incredible,” he said.

The decision to switch allegiance was driven by Okonkwo’s ambition to win trophies for Nigeria. He highlighted the passion Nigerians have for football and emphasized his desire to contribute to the nation’s success. “I want to win trophies for my country. I know how much Nigerians love football, how important it is to them, and being able to do that for my country and where I am from would be incredible,” he stated. He aims to build trust with the coaching staff and teammates by becoming a consistent and reliable presence in goal.

Okonkwo understands the weight of expectation from Nigerian fans and is prepared to embrace the emotional intensity that comes with representing the Super Eagles. “I understand. The same feeling they have, I will also be feeling them too,” he said. He believes connecting with fans emotionally will help him perform at his best and fight for the badge with pride. “The one thing I love to do is to make saves. I hope I can make many for Nigeria and I hope I can become a legend.”

He also spoke about his admiration for past Super Eagles stars like John Obi Mikel, Vincent Enyeama, Ahmed Musa, and Victor Moses, recalling watching Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations victory with his father. In camp, he expects to bond closely with Ryan Alebiosu, a long-time friend, and enjoys the lively energy of Samuel Chukwueze. The Super Eagles will face Zimbabwe on May 26 at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, aiming to defend their Unity Cup title. Okonkwo’s inclusion marks a new chapter for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department and signals a promising future for the team.
