A tragic road accident at New Mile 3 Market along the Gombe–Yola highway on Wednesday claimed the lives of a female police officer and an unidentified man, while two others, including the truck driver, were injured. The incident occurred when a DAF truck, registration number XH 122 GME, carrying bags of grain, lost control due to brake failure and crashed into roadside shops, motorcycles, and pedestrians. The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the details, stating that the truck was en route from Taraba State when the accident happened.
According to police spokesperson Buhari Abdullahi, the driver was attempting to enter a filling station via a one-way route when the brakes failed, leading to the collision. The crash resulted in the death of Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, who was attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Command, and one male pedestrian whose identity remains unknown. Two other individuals, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The accident also damaged three motorcycles and caused significant destruction to nearby shops.
Witnesses reported that the truck plowed into traders, passersby, and commercial stalls as it lost control, creating chaos in the busy market area. The swift response of security personnel and emergency responders helped manage the scene and provide immediate medical attention to the injured. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash, but early findings point to brake failure and possible violation of traffic rules as contributing factors.
Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to comply with traffic regulations and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to prevent similar tragedies.
