The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully recovered 17 vehicles stolen at gunpoint across Abuja, marking a major breakthrough in the fight against car theft in the nation’s capital. The operation, which led to the arrest of 14 suspects, was announced by the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters on Tuesday. The recovered vehicles, including several high-end models like Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon, and Range Rover, were seized following intelligence-led operations conducted in strategic areas such as Mabushi, Durumi, Maitama, and the Central Business District.
CP Sanusi revealed that the suspects, including Mustapha Difcha, Ahmed Difcha, Sanusi Isa, John Emmanuel, Blessed Yusuf, Chinaza Ijere, Joshua Luka Dagana, Mohammed Sabiu, Zakariya Liman, Babajo Ishaya, Cornellius Abang, Sani Kabiru, Gambo Ibrahim, and Jakuta Kandoki Ibrahim, are currently in custody. He emphasized that the operation was a direct response to the rising incidents of armed car theft in the FCT, and the strategic deployment of police units from Mabushi, Durumi, Maitama, and Central Police Station Divisions played a crucial role in the success.
Among the recovered vehicles are a black Toyota Avalon XLE with registration number LKJ 232 CV, a Toyota Camry stolen from Kaduna State and recovered in Abuja with registration DKA 988 MT, and a black Ford Jeep with plate number KWL 978 PP. Other vehicles include a 2003 Toyota Corolla (DBT 467 BZ), a dark grey Toyota Corolla S without a registration number, a green Nissan (RBC 99 XP), and a 2013 Hyundai Elantra (ABJ 904 HL). The command also recovered a Nissan SUV and a 2021 Toyota Hilux, both without registration numbers, as well as a white Range Rover (ABJ 36 AS) whose theft was foiled during the operation.
Additional recovered vehicles include a black Volkswagen Golf 2 (JJJ 112 DW), a gold Toyota Camry (ABJ 513 CN), a black Volkswagen Golf 3 without registration, and a Toyota Carina (CQ 302 GGE) stolen from Durumi and later found in Kaduna State. One black Hyundai (ABJ 371 DZ) was abandoned by suspects upon encountering a police patrol team from the Central Police Station.
CP Sanusi urged the public, particularly potential owners, to contact the FCT Police Command for verification using necessary documents. The recovery of these vehicles underscores the command’s commitment to enhancing security and reducing crime in Abuja. This operation is expected to serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals and restore public confidence in law enforcement’s ability to protect property and lives.
