Operatives of the Delta State Police Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit (CACU) have arrested two suspected cultists in Ibusa Community, Oshimili North Local Government Area, following a coordinated operation on 19 June 2026. The arrests, made at approximately 23:45 hours, were carried out based on credible intelligence aimed at curbing cult-related violence and criminal activities in the state. During the operation, police recovered one English pump-action gun loaded with five live cartridges, a cutlass, charms, and substances suspected to be illicit drugs. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday. He explained that the operation targeted a suspected criminal hideout in Ibusa, a community known for occasional cult-related incidents. The CACU team acted swiftly to neutralize the threat and prevent further violence in the area. SP Edafe emphasized that the police remain committed to ensuring peace and security across Delta State, particularly in regions affected by cultism.
The two suspects arrested have been identified as Okonkwo Prosper, 26, and Tuesday Emmanuel, 25, both residents of Aniofu, Aniocha North Local Government Area. Preliminary investigations indicate that they are alleged members of a cult group linked to multiple violent clashes in Ibusa and surrounding areas. The recovered weapons and paraphernalia suggest the group was prepared for armed confrontation, raising concerns about the potential for further unrest if not contained.
The police have also launched efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the criminal group. SP Edafe urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. He assured the public that the Command will continue to deploy intelligence-driven operations to dismantle cult networks and restore order. The arrest is seen as a significant step in the broader campaign against cultism in Delta State.
This incident highlights the persistent challenge of cult-related violence in parts of the Niger Delta region, where youth involvement in such groups remains a security concern. The recovery of live ammunition and weapons underscores the dangerous nature of these criminal elements. Authorities are now working to trace the source of the arms and determine if the group has external links. The police are also collaborating with community leaders to address the root causes of cultism, including unemployment and lack of youth engagement.
As the investigation progresses, the Delta State Police Command remains focused on maintaining public safety. The successful operation in Ibusa sends a strong message to other criminal groups operating in the state. The authorities expect this arrest to deter further acts of violence and encourage more youth to seek lawful alternatives. The fight against cultism continues, with the police committed to ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
