Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, marking a significant political shift in Bauchi State. The move follows his withdrawal from the APC governorship primary in Bauchi, where he accused the party of irregularities and violations of its own guidelines. In a statement released on Sunday, Umar cited a lack of internal democracy, unfair treatment of members, and growing disregard for grassroots voices as key reasons for his departure from the ruling party.
Umar emphasized that his decision was not made in isolation but after extensive consultations with political associates, youth groups, women organizations, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South and other parts of the state. He described the PRP as a party built on principles of justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-centered leadership. According to him, joining the opposition party is a strategic step toward deepening democratic governance and ensuring responsive representation for the people of Bauchi.
The senator stressed that true democracy can only thrive when political parties uphold fairness, provide equal opportunities, and allow active participation in decision-making. He called on patriotic leaders to unite in addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance. “The time has come for patriotic leaders to unite and rescue the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance,” Umar declared.
He added that Nigerians deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that listens to their concerns. “Politics should be about service, justice, development and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he said. Umar reaffirmed his commitment to policies and programs aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary citizens, especially in Bauchi State.
He urged his supporters and political allies to join him in what he described as a collective struggle for good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development. The senator assured the people of Bauchi of his continued dedication to their progress, unity, and development, pledging to deliver purposeful leadership and effective representation in the National Assembly.
This defection could influence the political dynamics in Bauchi State, especially as the 2027 elections approach. Umar’s move may also signal a broader trend of disillusionment within the APC, particularly among lawmakers who feel marginalized or excluded from key party decisions. His alignment with the PRP may strengthen the opposition’s presence in the region and add momentum to calls for political reform.
