Gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Lakwaya village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday, killing two people and injuring several others in a violent raid that left the community in shock. The attack, which occurred around 4 pm, saw over 30 motorcycles carrying armed assailants storm the village, opening fire indiscriminately and triggering widespread panic among residents. The assailants reportedly came from Gidan Biris, a border town between Kano and Katsina states, according to an anonymous traditional ruler in the area who spoke with Daily Nigerian.
The traditional ruler confirmed that two people lost their lives during the attack—one in Lakwaya and another in Gidan Biris. He also stated that livestock was stolen before military personnel arrived to confront the attackers. “Right now, as we are speaking with you, there is a clash going on. Soldiers have just arrived and are responding accordingly. As I am speaking with you now, I am standing beside the body of one of those killed,” he said, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the security response.
The attackers’ arrival on motorcycles allowed them to move swiftly through the village, firing sporadically and creating chaos. The traditional ruler added that troops were actively responding to the incident based on intelligence received. Despite the violence, he confirmed that no abductions were reported during the attack, which is a notable detail given the frequency of kidnappings in the region. However, the theft of cattle remains a significant concern for local farmers and herders.
The body of one victim was transported to Gwarzo General Hospital for medical examination before being returned to the village for burial once security was restored. This procedure reflects standard protocols for handling fatalities in such incidents, ensuring proper documentation and respect for the deceased. The attack has heightened fears among residents, especially given the increasing frequency of similar raids in northern Nigeria.
Security forces continue to engage the attackers, with clashes still ongoing at the time of reporting. The incident underscores the persistent threat of banditry in the region, particularly along the porous borders between Kano and Katsina states. As the military works to contain the situation, communities remain on high alert, calling for stronger security measures to prevent future attacks. This latest violence adds to the growing list of security challenges facing northern Nigeria, where banditry and armed criminality continue to disrupt daily life.
