Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully neutralised suspected members of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group and recovered weapons and stolen livestock during coordinated military operations in Sokoto and Katsina States. The military confirmed the developments in a press release issued by the Defence Headquarters Nigeria on May 15, 2026. The operations were part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and banditry in the North-West region of Nigeria. The military stated that the actions were carried out in response to intelligence and distress calls from local communities.
In Sokoto State, troops responded to a distress call reporting an attempted arson at a Nigerian Immigration Service facility in Ruwa Wiri village, located in Tangaza Local Government Area. Upon arrival, the military engaged the suspects in a fierce gun battle. Two suspected terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while others fled the scene. Following the engagement, troops conducted a thorough sweep of the area and recovered two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and a motorcycle used by the attackers. The recovered weapons and equipment are now under military custody for further investigation.
Meanwhile, in Katsina State, troops on a routine fighting patrol in Jibia Local Government Area encountered a group of suspected terrorists near Danya Bakwai settlement. The suspects were found moving with 62 rustled livestock, which they abandoned during the engagement. The military confirmed that the livestock were recovered intact and later handed over to their rightful owners at the palace of the Daddara District Head in Jibia. This gesture reinforced the military’s commitment to protecting civilians and restoring confidence in affected communities.
The Defence Headquarters emphasized that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains fully committed to eradicating terrorism and banditry in the region. The operation, which covers parts of Sokoto, Katsina, and other North-West states, has consistently targeted criminal networks responsible for kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling. The recent successes demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the military’s responsiveness to threats. These actions also highlight the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
The neutralisation of terrorists and recovery of weapons and livestock underscore the military’s sustained pressure on criminal elements. As security operations continue, the Nigerian Armed Forces remain focused on ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region. The public is encouraged to support these efforts by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
