The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory, winning all 17 chairmanship positions in the Yobe State local government elections held on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The results were officially announced on Sunday at the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) headquarters in Damaturu by the commission’s chairman, Dr Ibrahim Mohammad Yabani. He described the electoral process as smooth and hitch-free, noting that polling took place across 178 electoral wards in all 17 local government areas of the state. Ten political parties participated in the election, fielding candidates for both chairmanship and councillorship positions, reflecting a competitive political landscape.
Dr Yabani confirmed that votes were counted and collated immediately after polls closed, with councillorship results declared at the ward level and chairmanship results announced at local government collation centres. The APC’s dominance was evident in every local government area, with candidates securing varying vote totals. In Bade Local Government, Musa Kalan Dagona of the APC won with 54,312 votes, while Fune LG saw Baba Goni Bade emerge victorious with 74,411 votes. Other notable wins included Abdulmumini Usaini in Fika with 61,326 votes, Alhaji Salisu Muktari in Potiskum with 58,705 votes, and Mohammed Ahmed Mairami in Nguru with 45,836 votes.
The APC also claimed victories in Geidam (Alhaji Mohammed Musa, 35,832 votes), Gujba (Alhaji Dala Mala, 27,900 votes), Gulani (Alhaji Dayyabu Ilu, 35,999 votes), Jakusko (Umaru Aguwa Jakusko, 47,653 votes), Karasuwa (Alhaji Umara Mohammed, 39,320 votes), Machina (Idriss Mai Bukar, 24,092 votes), Nangere (Samaila Musa, 37,780 votes), Tarmuwa (Mohammed Lamido Musa Tarmuwa, 19,500 votes), Yunusari (Hon. Zanna Zakariya, 35,848 votes), and Yusufari (Adam Jibrin, 31,930 votes). Despite the APC’s overwhelming success, two councillorship seats were won by opposition parties — the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Fune and the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Karasuwa — marking a rare break from APC control at the councillor level.
The election outcome underscores the APC’s continued stronghold in Yobe State’s local governance structure. While opposition parties showed some presence, their influence remained limited to specific councillor positions. The peaceful conduct of the election and the transparent declaration of results reflect growing confidence in Nigeria’s electoral processes, particularly at the sub-national level.
