Police Foil Bandit Attack, Recover Rocket Launchers in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Police Command has successfully foiled a planned attack by armed bandits on Tsabre Village in Isa Local Government Area, recovering weapons and other items after a fierce gun battle early Friday morning. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on October 2, 2026, when a large group of armed bandits stormed the village, opening fire sporadically to instill fear among residents. The attackers’ intent appeared to be disruption and possible looting, but their mission was thwarted by swift police intervention.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Divisional Police Officer in Isa immediately deployed tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Violent Crime Response Unit. These officers engaged the bandits in an intense exchange of gunfire, forcing them to retreat into a nearby forest under heavy resistance. According to DSP Ahmad Rufai, the command’s spokesperson, the encounter resulted in casualties among the fleeing attackers, though exact numbers were not disclosed.

Following the withdrawal of the bandits, police conducted a thorough search of the surrounding bushes and recovered significant evidence. Among the seized items were two rocket launchers, two empty AK-47 magazines, a keypad Tecno phone without a battery, a torchlight, an Army jungle hat, a sweater cap, five pairs of sandals, and a rain jacket. These findings suggest the attackers were well-prepared for a coordinated assault and may have been operating with some level of organisation.

Commissioner of Police CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa commended the officers for their bravery and prompt response, highlighting their crucial role in protecting lives and property. He reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining security across Sokoto State and urged citizens to remain vigilant. Residents were advised to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police station to aid ongoing investigations.

CP Shaffa also called on the public to report anyone with suspected gunshot wounds seeking medical treatment, as this could assist in tracking down the remaining bandits. He emphasized that such intelligence is vital in dismantling criminal networks operating in the region. The police continue to patrol the area and are working closely with community leaders to ensure sustained peace.

This incident underscores the persistent threat of armed banditry in northern Nigeria, particularly in rural communities. However, the successful interception demonstrates the capability and readiness of Sokoto’s security forces. As authorities intensify efforts to combat insecurity, residents are encouraged to cooperate fully with law enforcement to build safer communities.
