Suspected Bandits Attack Oyo Security Base, Steal Properties [Photos]

Suspected bandits attacked the base of Operation Burst, a joint security outfit in Oyo State, early Sunday morning, leaving no casualties but causing significant damage to property. The attack occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. along the Igbeti/Igboho road, situated between Olorunsogo and Oorelope local government areas. Operation Burst is a collaborative force composed of members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Army, established by the late immediate past governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi.

The security post, which had been constructed to enhance safety along the vulnerable stretch of road, was set ablaze during the assault. According to Kazeem Olayanju, Chairman of Olorunsogo Local Government Area, the attackers burned down the entire structure and also torched an abandoned vehicle located at the site. He confirmed the incident during a telephone interview with DAILY POST, emphasizing that while there were no injuries or loss of life, the assailants made off with valuable equipment including a generator and a motorcycle.

Olayanju stated, “The information is true. But there is no casualty. They burnt the security post we constructed for them. They also set ablaze an abandoned vehicle there. They also carted away their generator and motorcycle. It occurred today around 5am and 6am.” His remarks underscore the severity of the attack and the ongoing threat posed by armed criminal elements in the region.

The Igbeti/Igboho road has long been a hotspot for insecurity, with frequent reports of kidnappings, robberies, and attacks on security personnel. The destruction of the Operation Burst base raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures and highlights the need for increased vigilance and deployment in the area. Despite the setback, authorities have not disclosed any immediate response plan or investigation details.

This incident adds to a growing list of security challenges facing Oyo State, particularly in rural and border communities. The attack on a joint military and civil defence outpost signals a bold escalation by bandits who continue to exploit gaps in security infrastructure. As law enforcement agencies assess the situation, residents in nearby towns remain on high alert.
