Twelve people have died and two others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident involving two Volkswagen cars along the Kaduna-Kachia Road in Kaduna State, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps. The incident occurred at Doka Village in Southern Kaduna on Tuesday morning, leaving 14 occupants of the two vehicles affected. The Kaduna State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Andrew Paul Longkam, confirmed the details, stating that the deceased included eight males and four females, while the two injured victims, both females, were rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
The accident involved two Volkswagen Golf III cars—one blue with registration number APP 394 FN and the other red with registration number ACN 205 HK. Both vehicles were carrying passengers when the crash happened, and investigations point to a tyre burst as the probable cause. Alarmingly, none of the occupants, including the two drivers, were wearing seat belts or using any form of protective safety gear at the time of the collision. This lack of safety measures likely worsened the severity of the injuries sustained.
Longkam disclosed that the crash was reported around 10:20 a.m., and the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene by 10:50 a.m. They joined forces with soldiers and police officers to carry out the rescue operation. The injured victims were evacuated to Rapha Hospital for immediate medical treatment, while the bodies of those who lost their lives were taken to Idon General Hospital for identification and preservation. Authorities are awaiting contact from relatives to facilitate the release of the remains.
Following the recovery of the two damaged vehicles, they were transported to Kajuru Police Station for further investigation and documentation. The FRSC has reiterated its call for motorists to adhere to safety regulations, especially the use of seat belts and regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such tragedies. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and negligence on Nigerian roads, particularly in high-risk areas like the Kaduna-Kachia corridor.
