An Indian police operation in Indore has led to the arrest of a Nigerian woman, Imyunel Joy, following the recovery of 57.18 grammes of cocaine valued at over Rs29 lakh (approximately N40.99 million). The incident occurred on Saturday during a surveillance mission in the Sinhasa IT Park area, where officers noticed Joy carrying a black bag and became suspicious of her behaviour. She was stopped, questioned, and subsequently searched, leading to the discovery of the drugs hidden in a transparent plastic pouch inside her bag. Authorities also seized her mobile phone as part of the investigation.
Joy, a resident of Lagos who had been staying in Mumbai’s Bandra East, was arrested after failing to provide satisfactory answers about her presence in the area during the Raksha Bandhan celebrations. Police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dishesh Agarwal, stated that officers were monitoring crowded zones for security purposes when they flagged Joy’s unusual conduct. Her inability to explain her movements raised further suspicion, prompting a thorough search that uncovered the narcotics.
The case has been registered at the Chandan Nagar police station under Sections 8 and 21 of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, which deals with possession and trafficking of controlled substances. During interrogation, Joy reportedly admitted to purchasing the cocaine at a lower price with the intention of reselling it in Indore at a higher markup. Investigators are now probing the source of the drugs, potential buyers, and any associates involved in the suspected drug network.
As a foreign national, Joy’s passport, visa status, immigration records, and details of her stay in India are being closely examined by authorities. This includes verifying her legal entry into the country and assessing whether she violated any immigration or residency regulations. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Indian law enforcement to combat drug trafficking, especially involving international individuals operating within urban centres.
