The Jigawa State Police Command has prosecuted 27 motorists for violating road traffic laws under its ongoing Operation Velvet, a statewide enforcement initiative aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. The arrests were made across various locations in the state as part of a broader campaign to curb dangerous driving practices and protect lives and property. The statement was issued on Sunday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, who detailed the nature of the offences committed by the suspects.
The motorists were apprehended for offences including overloading vehicles, driving without valid driver’s licences, and using unauthorised tinted permits. These violations are considered serious breaches of Nigeria’s road traffic laws and pose significant risks to public safety. As part of the enforcement process, the vehicles involved were impounded in accordance with legal procedures, and the suspects were formally charged before the appropriate courts for prosecution.
Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, emphasized that Operation Velvet is not targeted at any specific individual or group but is designed to promote discipline among all road users. He stressed that the operation seeks to ensure strict adherence to traffic laws, which are essential for reducing accidents and saving lives. CP Murtala urged all motorists in Jigawa State to always carry valid driver’s licences, avoid overloading their vehicles, and ensure their vehicles meet registration and roadworthiness standards.
He also issued a stern warning against the use of unauthorised tinted permits, noting that such actions undermine law enforcement efforts and compromise visibility on roads. The police boss called on drivers to operate within the confines of the law and to cooperate with enforcement personnel during the operation. The command confirmed that Operation Velvet will continue and be extended to cover major towns, highways, feeder roads, and other strategic locations throughout the state.
The police reassured law-abiding motorists that they have nothing to fear from the exercise, urging the public to support and cooperate with officers conducting the operations. They also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities or violations to help maintain order on the roads. With these measures, the Jigawa State Police Command aims to foster a safer and more disciplined road environment for all residents.
