The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has demanded justice and a full investigation into the attack and burning of the family home of party member Isaiah Thomas in Ikwerre Local Government Area, following a violent incident that occurred just one day after the official start of campaigns for the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections. The attack took place early Wednesday morning at the Thomas family compound in Omuoko, Aluu, where armed assailants arrived in large numbers, set fire to several buildings, and caused significant destruction to household property.
Thomas’ mother, Uchechi Thomas, revealed that the attackers appeared to be specifically searching for her son, who had hosted an ADC members’ meeting at the residence on Tuesday. She confirmed that valuable belongings were destroyed during the assault, leaving the family in shock and distress. The identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, but the timing of the attack—immediately after campaign activities began—has raised serious concerns about political violence and intimidation ahead of the elections.
ADC governorship candidate in Rivers State, Gabriel Pidomson, visited the scene on Wednesday alongside party officials to assess the damage and show solidarity with the affected family. He condemned the attack as unacceptable and contrary to democratic principles, emphasizing that such acts undermine the peaceful conduct of elections. Pidomson urged all politicians and their supporters to uphold tolerance and ensure their campaigns remain within legal boundaries.
He called on security agencies to launch a thorough and impartial investigation, stressing that those found responsible must be brought to justice without delay. “This is not how democracy should be practiced,” Pidomson said. “Political differences must be resolved through dialogue and lawful means, not through violence that endangers lives and property.” He also appealed for calm among ADC supporters and residents, urging them to remain peaceful despite the provocation.
Similarly, ADC State Chairman Chukwudi Dimkpa reached out to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, demanding a comprehensive probe into the incident and swift action against those involved.
