Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has been unanimously endorsed as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 senatorial election in the Ogun East Senatorial District. The historic decision was announced on Monday at a major stakeholders’ meeting held at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode, bringing together a broad spectrum of party leaders, local government officials, lawmakers, and grassroots representatives. The endorsement reflects widespread confidence in Abiodun’s leadership and governance record, with party stakeholders affirming his suitability to represent the district at the national level.
The gathering was attended by key political figures, including all 103 councillors from the nine local governments in Ogun East, ward chairmen, local government chairmen, past and present members of the National and State Assemblies, and members of the Governor’s Advisory Council. Prominent attendees included former senators Gbenga Kaka and Lekan Mustapha, Ogun East APC Chairman Adedoyin Adeleke, and respected party elders such as Kola Ogunjobi, Bayo Dayo, Durojaye, Pegba Otemolu, James Dina, and Osibote Amoran. Youth leaders, women’s groups, and grassroots mobilisers also participated, underscoring the broad-based support for Abiodun’s senatorial bid.
Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, former Ogun East senator Lekan Mustapha emphasized that the decision was rooted in a shared belief in Abiodun’s character, intellect, and capacity to deliver for the district. He confirmed that party leaders would formally communicate the endorsement to the governor and commit to purchasing his nomination forms for the 2027 election. “We will put a body together to deliver this message to our Governor that he has been adopted as the consensus candidate,” Mustapha stated, highlighting Abiodun’s strong leadership qualities.
Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, described the endorsement as historic and unanimous, praising the governor’s record in governance and party unity. He stressed that Abiodun’s proven track record makes him the most deserving candidate for the Senate seat. House of Representatives member Femi Ogunbanwo, representing Odogbolu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu North East, added that Abiodun’s administration has brought peace and development to the state, and expressed confidence that he would further enhance the district’s representation at the national level.
Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Afolabi Odulate, commended the governor’s performance and reiterated the district’s collective appeal for him to accept the senatorial nomination. Other notable attendees included Representatives Adesola Elegbeji and Joseph Adegbesan, who stood in solidarity with the governor. The event, marked by unity and enthusiasm, signals a strong political alignment within the APC in Ogun East ahead of the 2027 elections. This endorsement positions Governor Abiodun as a formidable contender in the upcoming senatorial race, with party leaders and grassroots mobilisers united behind his candidacy.
