Delta State Police Command has arrested seven suspected cultists and recovered weapons and incriminating items in a series of intelligence-led operations across the state. The arrests took place on 27 July 2026, following raids on criminal hideouts in Issele-Uku and Abraka. The suspects, all members of the notorious Maphite Confraternity, were apprehended after police acted on credible intelligence. The operations underscore the command’s ongoing commitment to tackling cultism and violent crimes in the state.
The seven suspects include Promise Esenjor, 26, from Abavo; Wisdom Victor, 23, from Umunede; James Wisdom, 25, from Agbor; Chinedu Munonye, 22, from Issele-Uku; Onyemakonor Collins, 20, from Agbor; Unah Oluchi, 21, from Agbor; and Azomani Favour, 23, from Issele-Uku. They were arrested during a raid by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU) in Issele-Uku. Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, confirmed that the suspects confessed to being part of the Maphite cult during preliminary investigations.
During the raid, law enforcement recovered one double-barrel gun, seven live cartridges, one cutlass, one Maphite cult beret, seven Android phones, and other incriminating exhibits. The items were seized from the hideout, providing strong evidence of the suspects’ involvement in criminal activities. The police are continuing investigations to determine the full extent of their operations and possible links to other criminal networks.
In a separate operation on the same day, operatives from Abraka Division intercepted a planned gathering of suspected criminals along Omono Road, Abraka. While most suspects fled upon seeing the police, one man, Wale Morakinyo, 27, was apprehended. A search of his bag revealed two locally fabricated pistols and four live cartridges. Morakinyo is currently in custody, and police are actively pursuing the others who escaped.
Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reiterated the command’s dedication to intelligence-driven operations aimed at curbing cultism and violent crimes. He emphasized the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and security. CP Oyeniyi urged residents to report suspicious activities and provide credible information to assist law enforcement in their efforts.
These operations reflect a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence in the security apparatus. The arrests and seizures demonstrate the effectiveness of proactive policing and community engagement.
