Usman Shehu Bawa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kaduna State for the 2027 general election, has officially announced Amos A. Gandu as his running mate, marking a significant step in the party’s campaign preparations. The announcement was made in Kaduna on Tuesday, following extensive consultations with party leaders, traditional elders, women’s groups, youth organizations, and other key stakeholders across the state. Bawa emphasized that the selection of Gandu reflects the PDP’s dedication to competence, unity, and inclusive leadership, values he says are essential for Kaduna’s future.
Bawa stated that Kaduna State currently stands at a critical juncture in its development, requiring strong, unifying leadership capable of addressing deep-rooted challenges and delivering effective governance. He stressed that the welfare of citizens must remain the top priority for any administration, and that his team is committed to placing public interest above all else. “Kaduna stands at a critical point in its history and requires leadership that can unite its diverse people, deliver good governance, and place the welfare of citizens above every other consideration,” Bawa said during the announcement.
Amos A. Gandu, the chosen running mate, is a native of Jaba Local Government Area in Kaduna State. He has a proven track record of public service, having held various positions in the state’s governance structure over the years. His experience and deep understanding of Kaduna’s socio-political landscape were cited as key factors in his selection. Bawa highlighted Gandu’s ability to bridge divides and his commitment to inclusive development as qualities that align with the party’s vision for the state.
The PDP’s decision to name Gandu as running mate comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections. The party aims to consolidate its support across ethnic and religious lines, and the choice of a running mate from Jaba, a region known for its diverse population, is seen as a strategic move to promote unity. Stakeholders within the party have welcomed the announcement, noting that the selection process was transparent and consultative.
As the 2027 governorship race gains momentum, Bawa and Gandu’s partnership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the PDP’s campaign narrative. Their focus on unity, competence, and citizen-centered governance positions them as contenders who prioritize stability and progress. The announcement signals the party’s readiness to engage in a robust electoral contest, with the goal of securing victory in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states. This development sets the stage for a dynamic and competitive election season in Kaduna.
