Yobe State Police Command has arrested three suspected vandals and recovered stolen power cables and a tricycle in a targeted operation aimed at curbing the destruction of critical public infrastructure in the state. The arrests took place on July 23, 2026, following a coordinated crackdown by operatives of the Gashua Area Command. The suspects were apprehended based on credible intelligence, marking a significant step in the state’s efforts to protect vital utilities and ensure public safety.
The primary suspect, Abubakar Idris, 27, is an aluminium pot maker from Sabon Gari in Gashua Local Government Area. He was found in possession of two large bundles of suspected stolen power cables, which are believed to have been cut from public transmission lines. Police officials confirmed that further investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects: Sumaila Suleiman, 25, and Ibrahim Ado, 26. All three are now in custody and facing charges related to theft and sabotage of public property.
In addition to the suspects, law enforcement recovered a tricycle, commonly known as a Keke NAPEP, with registration number 497 DPH. This vehicle is believed to have been used to transport the stolen cables across the area. Police also seized an unregistered motorcycle, which is suspected to have been used during the criminal operation. The recovery of these vehicles is seen as a major breakthrough in tracing the movement and network of the suspected syndicate.
According to SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer, investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the group who remain at large.
