A joint security operation led by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and forest guards successfully rescued two kidnapped children in a dense forest area between Oba Isin and Owa Onire in Isin/Ifelodun Local Government Areas of Kwara State on Thursday. The victims, identified as 16-year-old Fatima Azeez and her five-year-old brother Ibrahim Azeez, were recovered unharmed after being held captive by armed bandits. The rescue mission, part of ongoing government efforts to combat kidnapping and terrorism, also resulted in the elimination of two armed criminals. Several others fled the scene with serious injuries following a fierce confrontation with the security forces.
The operation unfolded after intelligence reports pinpointed the location of the kidnappers’ hideout deep within the forest. Security operatives moved swiftly, launching a coordinated assault that caught the bandits off guard. The team’s quick response and tactical precision ensured the safe recovery of the children without any harm to the victims. Local authorities confirmed the identities of the rescued siblings and praised the security agencies for their professionalism and efficiency.
During the raid, security forces recovered several weapons and supplies from the criminals’ camp. Among the seized items were one AK-47 rifle, a single-barrel gun, a fully loaded magazine with nine empty rounds, a mini-solar panel, and various food items. These findings suggest the bandits were well-equipped and prepared for prolonged concealment, indicating a level of organization within the criminal network. The recovery of weapons and supplies strengthens the case for continued vigilance and robust security measures in the region.
This rescue operation is part of a broader multi-agency initiative aimed at curbing kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes across Nigeria. The government has consistently emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling insecurity, especially in rural and forested areas where criminals often find refuge. The DSS, in coordination with other security agencies, has intensified surveillance and patrols in high-risk zones, including Kwara State’s forested regions.
The incident underscores the persistent threat of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria, even as security forces adapt and respond with greater effectiveness. Families in the area have expressed relief over the safe return of the children, while also calling for sustained security presence to prevent future attacks. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any remaining suspects.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity, this successful rescue highlights the importance of intelligence-led operations and coordinated responses. The government’s commitment to protecting citizens, especially vulnerable children, remains a priority in the fight against criminal networks operating in remote areas.
