The Osun State Police Command has arrested 24 suspects linked to cult-related killings, political thuggery, and other violent crimes in the state, as security agencies intensify efforts to ensure peace ahead of the governorship and general elections. Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, made the announcement during a press briefing held on Monday at the police command headquarters in Osogbo. He emphasized that the arrests are part of ongoing operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence in the state’s security.
CP Gotan stated that the Command had been closely monitoring a surge in cult-related violence and acts of political thuggery, some of which had been tied to election-related tensions. He noted that these incidents were not isolated but part of a broader pattern threatening public safety and social harmony. The police have intensified surveillance and operations across key areas of the state to preempt further violence and apprehend those responsible.
Among those arrested are Kareem Saheed (also known as “Tanfiani”), Oyeladun Muideen (“Akilapa”), Ridwan Adekola, Mukaila Azeez (“Mikki”), Sunday Friday (“Akube”), Olamilekan Fatai, Tiamiyu Ismail, Famuyiwa Adekunle Toib, and Ajiboye Toheed. Additional suspects include Morufu Sodiq, Folorunsho Moshood, Hassan Sodiq, Badiru Saheed, Adegoke Olalekan, Faruk Olawale, Iyanuoluwa Sarumi, Afolabi Ahmed, Adeshina Lukman, Mutiu Opeyemi, Olushola Daniel, Abiola Olabode, Azeez Abiodun, Babatunde Kehinde, and Dada Mayowa. All are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner stressed that the arrests reflect the Command’s resolve to combat cultism, political violence, and other criminal activities that undermine public order. He warned cultists, political thugs, and anyone planning to disrupt peace to desist from such actions or face the full force of the law. “I want to reiterate the Command’s commitment to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the forthcoming elections,” CP Gotan said.
He also assured law-abiding citizens that the police would remain professional, neutral, and non-partisan in carrying out their duties. The Command, he added, would uphold the rule of law without fear or favour. The public is encouraged to report suspicious activities and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and security in their communities.
As the election season approaches, the Osun State Police Command’s actions signal a proactive stance to prevent violence and protect democratic processes. The arrests are expected to serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar acts of lawlessness.
