Woman Allegedly Kills Newborn, Hides Remains Near Mosque in Yobe State

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder and concealment of a newborn baby girl in Damaturu, the state capital, following a distress call received on June 23, 2026. The incident, which has shocked residents and authorities alike, occurred in the Anguwar Boka area, where the infant’s body was discovered hidden in a box behind a mosque. The Violent Crime Response Unit swiftly responded to the emergency call at approximately 4:10 p.m., initiating an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.

Preliminary findings indicate that a female suspect, who had recently given birth, allegedly strangled the newborn and concealed the body before abandoning it in the box. The police have confirmed that both suspects are now in custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations. The Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed these details in an official statement, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the commitment of law enforcement to bring justice.

Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, condemned the act as “heinous and inhuman,” underscoring the sanctity of human life, especially that of vulnerable individuals like newborns. He warned that the police will not tolerate any form of violence against children or other defenseless persons, and assured the public that those found guilty will face full legal consequences. The Commissioner also stressed the importance of safeguarding children’s rights, which are enshrined in Nigerian law and international human rights standards.

The Yobe State Police Command has reiterated its call for public vigilance and cooperation, reminding citizens that every child is entitled to protection, care, and dignity under the law. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The case has drawn widespread attention across the region, highlighting the need for stronger community support systems for new mothers and at-risk individuals.

As investigations progress, the police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of societal responsibility in protecting the most vulnerable. The outcome of this case may influence future policies and public awareness campaigns on maternal health and child protection in northern Nigeria.
