The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims by Governor Abba Yusuf that the party’s decision not to contest the recently held Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election signals weakness ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement, the NDC Chairman in Kano State, Hussaini Isa Mai Riga, emphasized that the party remains focused on long-term strategic development rather than engaging in short-term political theatrics. The governor’s remarks, delivered through his spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, had suggested that NDC’s absence from the bye-election was a sign of impending defeat for the party in future elections.
Mai Riga stated that the NDC is not distracted by political statements designed to score cheap points. He stressed that the party’s current efforts are centered on building a strong, people-driven structure across all 44 local government areas in Kano State. According to him, skipping one bye-election does not reflect weakness but rather strategic discipline. “NDC is a party of strategy and discipline. Skipping one bye-election does not mean we are weak. It means we are focused on the bigger picture,” he said in a statement released by his media aide, Adam Said Adam.
The NDC Chairman highlighted that the party’s priority is to consolidate its grassroots base, unite its members, and field credible candidates who can earn the trust of Kano’s electorate in 2027. He noted that the party has drawn lessons from Nigeria’s political history and will not squander resources on contests that do not align with its broader vision. Instead, NDC will channel its energy into mobilization, political education, and policy development aimed at tackling unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship affecting ordinary citizens.
Mai Riga expressed confidence that with the backing of Kano residents and the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the party, NDC will emerge victorious in the next governorship election. He urged members across the state to remain calm, avoid provocation, and continue engaging in lawful political activities. He also called on security agencies to remain neutral and ensure a fair and level playing field as political activities intensify in the lead-up to 2027.
The NDC Kano Chapter reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, issue-based politics, and delivering good governance to the people of Kano State. The party remains focused on building sustainable political infrastructure that can withstand electoral challenges and deliver tangible results for the people. As Nigeria prepares for the next general elections, the NDC’s strategic approach in Kano could shape the political landscape in one of the country’s most influential states.
