Two Killed in Alleged Cult-Related Clashes in Edo State

Two people have been killed in separate gun attacks linked to suspected cult activities in Edo State, sparking alarm over rising violence in the region. The incidents occurred on Monday in Ugbiyokho, along the Ekehuan Road in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, and at Jattu Junction in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. Authorities have confirmed the deaths and arrested three suspects in connection with the Auchi shooting, while investigations continue into the motive behind the attacks.

In the first incident, a motor park worker identified as Jogodo was shot dead around 10:30 a.m. at Jattu Junction in Auchi. Suspected gunmen arrived in a black Lexus RX 350 SUV and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The police have since sealed off the park, citing the need to prevent further violence and preserve the crime scene. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was linked to a dispute over control of the motor park, a common flashpoint for cult-related conflicts in the area.

In the second incident, a young man identified as Happy was fatally shot in Ugbiyokho while returning home from work. According to an anonymous source, the attackers had laid an ambush near his residence. As his wife opened the gate, the assailants emerged and shot him at close range before escaping. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but local residents fear it may be connected to ongoing cult rivalries in the community.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrests of three suspects in connection with the Auchi incident. ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Public Relations Officer, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered the suspects’ transfer to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the command headquarters for further interrogation. She emphasized that the park remains closed as part of security measures to prevent escalation.

These violent incidents have reignited concerns over cult-related violence in Edo State, particularly in areas like Auchi and Ovia North-East, where such clashes have become increasingly frequent. Residents are calling for stronger law enforcement presence and more effective strategies to curb the influence of cult groups. The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all necessary steps are being taken to bring the perpetrators to justice. As tensions remain high, authorities are urged to act swiftly to restore peace and prevent further loss of life in the region.
