A fire incident in Ilorin, Kwara State, caused by a child playing with a lighter, has raised alarm over household fire safety in Nigeria. The incident occurred on Thursday, around 5:08 p.m., at No. 38, Aduagbemi Street, behind Uniform Company, off Asa Dam Road in the Ilorin metropolis. The fire broke out in a three-bedroom flat, affecting one room before firefighters arrived to contain the blaze. According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, the fire started when a child used a lighter to ignite pieces of paper, which then came into contact with nearby combustible materials.
The fire quickly escalated before neighbours noticed the smoke and raised the alarm. Firefighters responded promptly and managed to bring the situation under control, preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the building or neighbouring properties. Alabi Muhammed, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, issued a public advisory urging parents and guardians to keep matches, lighters, and other ignition sources out of children’s reach. Muhammed also encouraged residents to install basic fire safety equipment in their homes, such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, to respond effectively in emergencies.
