Armed bandits on motorcycles attacked Iluke community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, but were repelled by a coordinated security response that thwarted what authorities described as a planned assault on Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, and surrounding residents. The incident, which began around 10:00 am, saw approximately 40 heavily armed bandits riding motorcycles invade the area, raising fears of mass abduction of students and civilians. The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the attack through a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.
The police received a distress call reporting the incursion, prompting immediate mobilization of security forces. Personnel from Kabba ‘A’ Division, Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military operatives, and local vigilante groups were deployed to the scene. The combined team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat into nearby bushland. According to the police, the operation successfully prevented a large-scale abduction, although preliminary investigations have not yet confirmed whether any individuals were taken during the chaos.
Tragically, three lives were lost in the violence. The victims were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, 70; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele. The police expressed deep condolences to the families and assured them that efforts to apprehend the perpetrators are ongoing. One suspected bandit was killed during the confrontation, while a security operative sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State has ordered sustained bush-combing operations and increased confidence-building patrols in the affected communities. Joint security teams remain active in the area, conducting search and arrest operations to capture the fleeing suspects. Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence to support ongoing efforts.
The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of Kogi State, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to armed banditry.
