A devastating fire has destroyed goods and properties worth millions of naira at the Nigerian Railway shopping complex in Ibadan, Oyo State, leaving traders reeling from significant losses. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Saturday, affecting three shops located within the complex along Aleshinloye Market Road. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the blaze caused extensive damage before it was fully extinguished.
Traders reported that the fire had already spread widely by the time they were alerted, with residents of Quarters 4 notifying shop owners around 6 a.m. One affected trader, Busari Olayemi, who runs an interior decoration business with his partner Adebola Sunday Adeniyi, confirmed that their inventory was completely destroyed. They lost products valued at approximately N21 million, including window blinds, curtain fabrics, industrial sewing machines, and other essential equipment.
Olayemi expressed deep distress over the loss, noting that not only were their own goods destroyed, but also materials belonging to customers. “What happened here destroyed a lot of things,” he said. “Our customers’ fabrics were burnt; you can see them over there. Our industrial sewing machines and tools were burnt right there.” The emotional and financial toll on the business owners is evident, as many have invested years into building their enterprises.
The Chairman of Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident and clarified that the fire occurred specifically within the Nigerian Railway complex, not in Aleshinloye market as some reports suggested. He stated that firefighters successfully put out the blaze after responding promptly to the emergency call. While no injuries were reported, the destruction of valuable merchandise and business assets has left a lasting impact on the local economy.
The fire highlights ongoing safety concerns in commercial areas across Nigeria, particularly in densely packed markets and complexes where fire prevention measures may be inadequate.
