The Presidency has launched a strong attack on Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, accusing him of lacking originality and leadership capacity. In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, dismissed Obi as a “copy-and-paste politician” who cannot match Tinubu’s vision and achievements. Onanuga’s remarks come amid growing political speculation and campaign preparations ahead of the 2027 elections, with both leaders positioning themselves as the best choice for Nigeria’s future.
Onanuga highlighted what he described as Obi’s failure to deliver tangible results during his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State. He argued that Obi has nothing to showcase as a governor, contrasting this with President Tinubu’s legacy in Lagos, where he left behind a comprehensive rail and road masterplan that is still being implemented today. According to Onanuga, Tinubu’s governance was marked by long-term planning and execution, while Obi’s administration lacked both innovation and impact.
The Presidential aide also cited Willie Obiano, Obi’s successor as Anambra governor, who reportedly criticized Obi for failing to provide adequate security during his time in office. Onanuga used this to reinforce his argument that Obi’s leadership was ineffective and unproven. He emphasized that Nigeria needs a leader who can think beyond the immediate concerns of the average citizen, someone who is both a deep thinker and a proven doer. In his view, Obi does not meet these criteria.
Onanuga concluded by stating that Peter Obi is “no match for President Bola Tinubu” and that the two are “not on the same level” in terms of leadership experience and vision. The statement reflects the increasing intensity of political discourse as the 2027 elections draw closer, with both camps engaging in public messaging to influence public perception. While Obi’s supporters have yet to respond officially, the Presidency’s comments are likely to fuel debate across political lines.
As Nigeria prepares for its next general election, the exchange underscores the high stakes involved and the growing rivalry between major political figures. The coming months will see more such statements as candidates seek to establish credibility and differentiate themselves in the eyes of voters. The outcome of these campaigns will shape the nation’s political landscape for years to come.
