The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as Joy for allegedly abducting two infants to replace her deceased twin babies ahead of a planned child dedication ceremony, marking one of the most disturbing child abduction cases in the state. The arrest, confirmed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe, came after a series of investigations into the disappearances of two young children. The suspect, Joy, reportedly carried out the abductions using deceptive tactics, posing as a customer at a groundnut-selling point to gain access to the first child.
According to SP Edafe, Joy allegedly took advantage of a moment of distraction and deceived a 14-year-old caregiver into handing over a four-month-old baby. She then fled with the infant, leaving behind shock and fear in the community. The second abduction, which occurred weeks earlier, followed a similar pattern. Joy reportedly befriended an 18-year-old mother under the pretense of helping her find a househelp, gaining her trust before stealing the baby during an outing.
During interrogation, Joy confessed to the crimes, revealing that she had lost her own biological twins at six weeks old while she was away from home. Overwhelmed by grief and fearing the backlash from relatives and guests at the upcoming dedication ceremony, she allegedly decided to replace the deceased children with stolen infants. She admitted to abducting the first child about three weeks before her arrest and stealing the second infant just a day before the scheduled dedication service.
The two abducted children were reportedly presented and dedicated during the ceremony before Joy’s arrest. Authorities have since recovered the infants and are working to ensure their safe return to their biological families. SP Edafe described the case as deeply disturbing and urged parents and caregivers to remain vigilant, especially when dealing with unfamiliar individuals.
The incident has sparked widespread concern across Delta State, highlighting the need for stronger community safety measures and awareness campaigns. Police are continuing to investigate Joy’s background and motives, while also warning the public against falling for deceptive schemes involving children. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in seemingly ordinary interactions and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable infants. The arrest underscores the commitment of law enforcement to protect children and bring perpetrators to justice, reinforcing public trust in the system.
