A Kano State lawmaker, Hon. Muhammad Ahmad Tomas, representing Makoda Constituency, has officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after defecting to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). The move, announced on Monday during a visit to Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, marks a significant political shift in northern Nigeria’s political landscape. Tomas was accompanied by the chairmen of Makoda and Dambatta Local Government Areas, Alhaji Isa Currency and Alhaji Jamilu Abubakar Dambatta, during the visit to Senator Jibrin’s residence in Abuja.
Senator Barau welcomed Tomas back to the APC, describing the return as a timely and commendable decision. He emphasized that the move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen governance and ensure political stability across the country. “This is a timely and commendable decision. It shows commitment to development and good governance,” Barau stated during the meeting. He further assured Tomas of fair treatment within the party and reiterated the APC’s openness to members returning from other political platforms.
The Deputy Senate President expressed confidence that Tomas’ return would enhance the APC’s influence in Kano North and across Kano State. He also shared his optimism on social media, posting on his Facebook page that the development would further consolidate the APC’s presence in the region. This endorsement from a senior national figure underscores the party’s strategic interest in retaining and re-engaging key political figures in the north.
Tomas’ return to the APC follows his recent loss of the NDC ticket for a second term in the Kano State House of Assembly. The decision to deny him the party’s nomination was reportedly made through consensus within the NDC leadership. His earlier departure from the APC to join the NDC had drawn attention, especially after being received by prominent party leaders, including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. However, his brief stint with the NDC appears to have ended with this return to the ruling party.
The political realignment highlights the fluid nature of party affiliations in Nigeria, particularly in states like Kano where political dynamics are often influenced by local power structures and leadership decisions. As the 2027 general elections approach, such moves are likely to shape party strategies and voter alignments in the region. Tomas’ return to the APC may signal a broader trend of political consolidation ahead of upcoming elections.
