The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed two separate rescue operations carried out in Kumbotso and Warawa Local Government Areas on Friday, May 29, 2026, after two individuals and a child fell into wells. The incidents occurred between 7:06 am and 9:40 am, prompting swift response from emergency personnel. In both cases, victims were rescued unconscious and handed over to local authorities for further action. The agency’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, detailed the operations in a statement released on the same day.
The first incident was reported by Hafizu Garba Saminu at Semegu, near El-Sadeeq Bread in Kumbotso LGA. Upon receiving the alert, firefighters from the State Headquarters were immediately dispatched. On arrival, they discovered an unidentified man, approximately 40 years old, trapped inside a well. He was rescued unconscious and subsequently handed over to Divisional Crime Officer Salisu Salihu at the Panshekara Police Division for investigation.
The second rescue took place in Madarin Taba village, Warawa LGA, after Buhari Saidu reported the incident. Fire service officials arrived to find a 32-year-old woman, Maimuna Shitu, and her 18-month-old son, Harisu Muntari, inside a well. According to the statement, the woman’s father, Muhammad Shitu, revealed that she suffers from mental illness. Both were rescued unconscious and transferred to the ward head, Yusuf Surajo, and the father for further care.
The Kano State Fire Service is currently conducting investigations to determine the exact causes of the two tragic incidents. The agency emphasized the need for heightened public awareness and preventive measures. Director Alhaji Sani Anas urged residents to ensure that all wells are properly covered to avoid similar accidents in the future. He stressed that such safety measures are essential, especially in rural areas where access to emergency services may be delayed.
These incidents highlight the ongoing risks posed by uncovered wells in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in communities with limited infrastructure. The fire service’s prompt response demonstrates the importance of community reporting and coordinated emergency action. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide more details on the circumstances surrounding the falls. The events serve as a sobering reminder of the need for constant vigilance and preventive safety practices across the state.
