Nigerian Army troops have successfully intercepted suspected arms traffickers and recovered seven illegal firearms in a coordinated operation at Samaru checkpoint in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The seizure, which took place on Monday, was carried out by Sector 7 troops acting on credible intelligence about the movement of weapons from Jos, Plateau State, to Niger State. The firearms were allegedly intended for supply to bandits operating in the region, raising concerns about the ongoing security challenges in northern Nigeria.
The operation was disclosed by security expert Zagazola Makama in a post shared on Monday. He stated that the interception occurred at approximately 9:40 a.m. during a targeted stop-and-search mission at the Samaru checkpoint. According to Makama, intelligence reports indicated that the suspects were transporting the weapons in an ash-coloured Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Security personnel quickly identified and tracked the vehicle before successfully intercepting it.
Troops acting on the intelligence managed to apprehend the suspects and seize the illegal firearms without any reported casualties or resistance. The recovered weapons are now in the custody of military authorities for further investigation. This development underscores the continued efforts by Nigerian security forces to disrupt the flow of arms to criminal elements and bandits who have been linked to numerous attacks on communities, police stations, and security outposts across the North-West and North-Central regions.
The interception is seen as a significant blow to arms trafficking networks that have long exploited porous borders and weak checkpoints to smuggle weapons into areas of insecurity. Kaduna State, in particular, has been a hotspot for banditry and kidnapping, with frequent clashes between security forces and armed groups. The successful operation at Samaru checkpoint highlights the importance of intelligence-driven policing and inter-agency cooperation in combating insecurity.
Zagazola Makama emphasized the need for sustained vigilance and improved intelligence gathering to prevent similar movements in the future. He noted that the timely intervention by Sector 7 troops demonstrates the effectiveness of proactive security measures. The incident also serves as a warning to those involved in illegal arms trade, reinforcing the government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the region.
As security agencies continue to clamp down on arms trafficking, this operation adds to a growing list of seizures aimed at weakening the operational capacity of bandits. The recovered weapons will likely be used as evidence in ongoing investigations, and the suspects are expected to face legal action. This development is a positive step in Nigeria’s broader fight against insecurity, especially as the military intensifies operations in high-risk zones.
