An ambush attack on residents of Kofai Amadu community in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State has sparked alarm and calls for enhanced security, according to the Taraba State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. The incident occurred on Thursday around 4:00 p.m. at a busy trading hub where people of different ethnic backgrounds were conducting normal commercial activities. Eyewitnesses reported sudden gunfire from a nearby bush close to the yam market, triggering widespread panic among traders, farmers, and market users. The unexpected violence forced many to flee for safety, disrupting daily life in the community.
As chaos unfolded, some farmers working in nearby farmlands observed armed attackers moving around a settlement approximately two kilometres from the market area. The attackers’ presence added to the fear and confusion, with residents scrambling to protect themselves and their families. In the aftermath, the body of a young man with gunshot wounds was found, prompting immediate alerts to security operatives. Community members quickly mobilized to inform authorities, who arrived at the scene to restore order and begin preliminary investigations into the incident.
The police spokesperson, Victor Mshelizah, confirmed the attack during a briefing, stating that the victims were individuals who had returned to their homes in the crisis-affected area to retrieve personal belongings. He identified the assailants as armed men described as Fulani militia, and confirmed that one person was shot and later declared dead by a medical doctor. Mshelizah emphasized that the situation has since been brought under control and that the area is currently calm. He also assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Residents of Kofai Amadu have expressed deep concern over the safety of their community and are urging security agencies to step up surveillance and patrol in the area. They demand swift justice for the victim and stronger measures to prevent future attacks. The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of Taraba State, where intercommunal tensions and armed violence continue to threaten peace and stability. As investigations proceed, the community remains on edge, hoping for lasting security and protection from such attacks. The government’s response to this incident will be closely watched as it could influence public confidence in the region’s safety.
