The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly vandalising electrical installations and stealing cables from the Igbotako General Hospital in Okitipupa Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as Promise Godspower and Pogbara Sigalo, were apprehended following a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The incident, which occurred recently, has raised alarm over the security of public infrastructure in the state. Authorities say the damage to the hospital’s electrical systems disrupted essential medical services and endangered patient care.
Promise Godspower, the primary suspect, is accused of unlawfully entering the hospital premises and destroying electrical installations before removing valuable cables. The police revealed that Sigalo, who was employed as a security guard at the facility, was arrested for suspected complicity in the crime. According to the police public relations officer, Abayomi Jimoh, Sigalo’s involvement became evident when Godspower was able to operate freely within the hospital without resistance. This raised immediate suspicion about possible collusion between the two.
Jimoh emphasized that the criminal act represents a serious threat to public infrastructure and the delivery of essential government services. He noted that the hospital’s electrical systems are critical for patient care, and their sabotage could have had dire consequences. The police spokesperson commended the Ondo State Police Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, for its swift response and commitment to safeguarding public assets. The command has been actively cracking down on crimes targeting government property across the state.
The arrest is seen as a significant operational success in the ongoing efforts to combat vandalism and theft of public infrastructure. The police are currently investigating the full extent of the damage and the possible network behind the crime. Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around public facilities. The case underscores the need for improved security measures at critical institutions like hospitals, especially those located in remote areas.
The suspects are being held at the Ondo State Police Command for further interrogation. Legal proceedings are expected to follow as the police gather more evidence. This incident highlights the growing challenge of protecting public infrastructure in Nigeria, where hospitals and other essential facilities often face threats from theft and sabotage. As the government continues to invest in healthcare, ensuring the security of these institutions remains a top priority. The arrest sends a strong message that criminal acts against public property will not be tolerated.
