Francis Uzoho, Nigeria’s experienced goalkeeper, took on media duties on Monday ahead of the Super Eagles’ Unity Cup clash against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Valley Stadium, offering insights into his leadership role and guidance for the team’s new goalkeeping recruits. The Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper, who made his senior debut in a pre-World Cup friendly against Argentina in November 2017, is one of the most seasoned players in camp. He emphasized the importance of mental strength and composure for the two uncapped goalkeepers in the squad: Arthur Okonkwo, a former Arsenal youth player, and Michael Alata, a rising star from Ikorodu City.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has included both Okonkwo and Alata in the squad for the Unity Cup, marking their first call-ups to the national team. Uzoho, speaking during the pre-match press conference, shared that he has already had conversations with the young goalkeepers to prepare them for the pressures of representing Nigeria. He stressed the need for focus, relaxation, and full awareness of the expectations that come with wearing the Super Eagles jersey. “It has just been two days with the boys and I’m trying my best to let them know the importance of them being here and also it’s a massive opportunity for them to be here,” Uzoho said. He added, “They should give their best and just be relaxed, and everything will work out fine.”
Uzoho explained that his leadership style is built on selective mentorship rather than overwhelming the younger players with too much advice. He prefers to step in when he senses the right moment to offer guidance. “For Arthur Okonkwo and the other goalkeeper, I always like talking to the boys whenever I have the chance. I don’t like bothering them with so much information,” he said. He reminded them that playing for Nigeria comes with high pressure, but they are already proven goalkeepers capable of handling it. “It’s all about the mentality representing Nigeria, so if they can work on their mentality, there are going to be ups and downs, so they should be able to maintain the pressure.”
The 27-year-old was in goal during Nigeria’s recent friendly against Jordan, playing for approximately one hour before being replaced by Adebayo Adeleye. His experience and calm demeanor continue to be valuable assets in the squad. As the Super Eagles prepare for their Unity Cup match, Uzoho’s leadership and mentorship could play a key role in shaping the confidence of the new goalkeepers. His words and actions reflect the kind of seasoned presence that can help young talent adapt quickly under pressure. This match could mark a turning point for Okonkwo and Alata as they take their first steps on the international stage, with Uzoho’s guidance serving as a crucial foundation for their development.
