NDLEA Arrests 38 Suspects in Kano Drug Raid Ahead of Eid al Kabir

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested 38 suspects in a two-day crackdown on drug trafficking and related crimes across Kano metropolis ahead of the Eid al-Kabir celebrations. The operation, conducted under the agency’s “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” targeted high-risk areas including Fagge, Hotoro, Gyadi Gyadi, Kofar Mata, Sheka, and Farm Centre. Authorities seized various illicit substances and paraphernalia, including Cannabis sativa, Exol-5, Diazepam, “Suck and Die,” rubber solution, and locally made weapons. The raids were intensified to curb criminal activities during the festive season when lawlessness often increases.

Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, Public Relations Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Saturday. He emphasized that the operation was part of a broader effort to maintain public safety and ensure a peaceful Sallah celebration for residents. Maigatari stated, “We will continue to hit the joints until our streets are safe and ensure a peaceful Sallah celebration for all citizens.” The statement highlighted the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug networks and disrupting criminal operations in vulnerable communities.

The suspects, who are currently in custody, are being interrogated as investigations continue. NDLEA officials believe the seized substances were intended for distribution during the holiday period, a time when drug use and related crimes often surge. The operation reflects the agency’s proactive stance in addressing drug abuse and its associated social ills, particularly in urban centers like Kano, which have long struggled with narcotics trafficking.

By targeting known hotspots, NDLEA aims to send a strong message to criminal elements that no area is off-limits. The use of locally made weapons recovered during the raids underscores the potential for violence linked to drug trade activities. Authorities are also working to strengthen community policing and public awareness to reduce demand for illegal substances.

This crackdown follows similar operations in other parts of the country, demonstrating NDLEA’s nationwide strategy to combat drug abuse. The agency continues to collaborate with local governments and security forces to enhance intelligence sharing and operational effectiveness. As the festive season approaches, NDLEA’s actions signal a determined effort to protect citizens and uphold public order.

The arrests and seizures mark a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against drug-related crimes, especially in northern states where such activities have been persistent. With ongoing operations like “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” NDLEA aims to create safer communities and reduce the societal impact of drug abuse. The agency’s efforts are expected to continue beyond the Eid period, reinforcing long-term security and public health goals.
