Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okechukwu Chinweko, popularly known as ‘Bullet,’ over allegations of abduction, rape, and unlawful possession of a firearm in Umudike community, Awka South Local Government Area. The arrest took place in the early hours of May 16, following a swift operation by the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu. Police operatives, acting on credible intelligence, stormed the suspect’s hideout and apprehended him without resistance. The operation also led to the recovery of a locally fabricated Beretta pistol and eight rounds of 9mm live ammunition.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday in Awka. He noted that the suspect was identified in connection with a violent incident that occurred on May 2, 2026. According to preliminary investigations, Chinweko allegedly abducted and raped a female victim before fleeing the scene. The victim was later rescued by police and taken to a medical facility, where she was found with varying degrees of injuries across her body.
Ikenga highlighted that the suspect has a distinctive tattoo on one arm with the inscription “Bullet,” which may have contributed to his notoriety in the community. The recovered firearm and ammunition are currently being processed as evidence by the police. Authorities are also conducting further investigations to determine if the suspect was involved in other criminal activities. The police have assured the public that they remain committed to maintaining law and order in the state.
The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Anambra State, where incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery have been reported in recent months. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. Community leaders and security experts have welcomed the arrest, viewing it as a step toward restoring public confidence in the security apparatus.
This development underscores the ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Police Command to dismantle criminal networks and bring perpetrators of violent crimes to justice. As investigations continue, the police are expected to present the suspect before a court of competent jurisdiction in due course. The case is likely to attract widespread attention given the nature of the alleged offenses and the suspect’s known alias.
