Kebbi 2027: Malami Declares State of Emergency on Misgovernance, Files ADC Nomination Form

Abubakar Malami, SAN, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has officially entered the 2027 Kebbi State governorship race by securing the nomination form of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Malami declared a “state of emergency on misgovernance” in Kebbi, citing widespread insecurity, poverty, educational decline, and poor healthcare access as urgent reasons for his political intervention.

Malami stated that he could no longer remain silent as the state continues to face severe governance and humanitarian challenges. He emphasized that the current leadership has failed to address critical issues affecting the lives of Kebbi’s residents, particularly the most vulnerable. His decision to contest is rooted in a deep concern for the state’s future and the well-being of its people.

The former minister highlighted alarming statistics to underscore his claims. He revealed that over 67 per cent of children aged 6 to 15 in Kebbi are out of school, while more than 88 per cent of children live in multidimensional poverty. Malami also pointed to a disturbing rise in child malnutrition, stating that hundreds of severely malnourished children died within nine months in 2025. Maternal mortality and poor health outcomes for children under five remain critical due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, especially in rural areas.

Insecurity, according to Malami, has worsened across several parts of the state. He cited recurring bandit attacks, kidnappings, and the displacement of farmers, all of which have contributed to a decline in economic activity. These challenges, he argued, reflect misplaced priorities and the collapse of key public sectors, including education, health, and security.

Malami promised to focus on security, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment, and governance reforms if elected. He emphasized his commitment to public service, accountability, and sustainable development, vowing to end what he described as an era of poor leadership and propaganda. He stressed that the current situation in Kebbi must change, and that change must begin with a new leadership approach.

His entry into the governorship race is seen as a significant development in Kebbi’s political landscape, given his national profile and experience in public service. As the 2027 elections approach, Malami’s campaign is expected to bring attention to the state’s deep-rooted challenges and galvanize public interest in governance reform. His candidacy may reshape the political dynamics in Kebbi, setting the stage for a more accountable and development-focused leadership in the years ahead.
