Thomas Dugeri, Majority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move marks a significant shift in Benue State’s political landscape as key figures realign their affiliations in preparation for upcoming electoral contests. Dugeri, who represents Kwande West State Constituency, was formally received into the PDP by former Benue State Governor and party leader, Samuel Ortom, during a ceremony held at Ortom’s residence in Abuja.
The presentation took place during Dugeri’s first meeting with Ortom since announcing his defection, underscoring the importance of the moment for both the lawmaker and the PDP leadership. Adzua Ashongo, deputy chairman of the PDP in Benue State, played a key role in introducing Dugeri to Ortom, highlighting the party’s structured approach to welcoming new members. Dugeri expressed deep gratitude to Ortom and other PDP leaders for the warm reception he and his supporters have received since joining the party.
He also thanked PDP members in Kwande and across Benue State for their acceptance, describing the response as encouraging and motivating. “I remain committed to the PDP and will work with other party leaders and members to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections,” Dugeri stated. He emphasized that his decision to join the PDP was driven by a desire to collaborate with the party and other stakeholders to achieve its objectives in the next electoral cycle.
In welcoming Dugeri, Ortom assured him and his supporters of equal opportunities within the party, reinforcing the PDP’s commitment to inclusivity and unity.
